Next House Showers Bring No Flowers Its hard to remember a time during my senior year of high school when I wasnt totally jazzed about MIT. I got accepted, and that was pretty much it for me. I was going to MIT. I never really entertained any possibility that there might be some cons to the pros to me, MIT was perfect. This is a bad attitude to have in all regards, because while its great to be excited, you forget that theres no such thing as perfect. My friends at Stanford write me long, tormented emails about their foods likeness to recycled cardboard; a girl I know at Berkeley calls me to complain about how her halls TV only plays in Spanish. I myself found MITs imperfections when I moved into Next House (not to mention that you cant switch out of Next if you move here in your first year but thats a story for another time). We may not have fire alarms going off every month, but anyone living at Next House will tell you horror stories about our terrible, TERRIBLE showers. They have absolutely no pressure, so the water dribbles on you like its from a crack in the ceiling. Not only that, but the Next residents seem to lose all realization that they share the sanitation station with ten or so others the minute they get wet, and think its okay to leave the entire contents of their shower onto the pa rt of the floor without a drain. At Next, you must swim before you shower. Often times the aforementioned residents also think its okay to leave enough hair pooled around the drain to make you think theyd shaved a small cow. Perhaps worst of all, we receive emails about every month telling us theyll be shutting down all the hot water yet again to fix some eternally elusive water problem. Guys on my hall make arrangements to stay at their fraternities these nights; others (probably the people who leave puddles) think its not too much a price to pay to stay stinky for the day, at everyone elses expense. Sometimes we dont even get warning about hot water being shut off. The morning finals began, specifically on the morning of my 8.01 final that I was certain I would fail, I stepped into the shower to be greeted by water of temperatures like that of the San Francisco bay. MIT does have excellent showers in its other dorms (some of which have their own bathroom per room) and especially at the Z Center (they have great pressure!). But as someone who likes to enjoy a hot shower every morning, Im almost definitely moving to another dorm next year. So to sum up, dont get tunnel vision; your dream school most certainly isnt going to be flawless. Im here to share the wisdom I gain from college with you, so here it is: dont be shocked when you get there to find everythings not always puppies and rainbows. And pressurized hot showers. Ice storm in Northeastern America has been common but the 1998 ice storm was exceptional. Ice storms are a major hazard in all parts of Canada except the North, but are especially common from Ontario to Newfoundland. The severity of ice storms depends largely on the accumulation of ice, the duration of the event, and the location and extent of the area affected. Based on these criteria, Ice Stormââ¬â¢98 was the worst ever to hit Canada in recent memory. From January 5-10, 1998 the total water equivalent of precipitation, comprising mostly freezing rain and ice pellets and a bit of snow, exceeded 85 mm in Ottawa, 73 mm in Kingston, 108 in Cornwall and 100 mm in Montreal (Environmental Canada, Jan 12/1998). Previous major ice storms in the region, notably December 1986 in Ottawa and February 1961 in Montreal, deposited between 30 and 40 mm of ice ââ¬â about half the thickness from the 1998 storm event! (Environmental Canada, Jan 12/1998). The extent of the area affected by the ice was enormous. Freezing precipitation is often described as ââ¬Å"a line ofâ⬠or ââ¬Å"spotty occurrences ofâ⬠. At the peak of the storm, the area of freezing precipitation extended from Muskoka and Kitchener in Ontario through eastern Ontario, western Quebec and the Eastern Townships to the Fundy coasts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. What made the ice storm so unusual, though, was that it went on for so long. On average, Ottawa and Montreal receive freezing precipitation on 12 to 17 days a year. Each episode generally lasts for only a few hours at a time, for an annual average total between 45 to 65 hours. During Ice Stormââ¬â¢98, it did not rain continuously, however, the number of hours of freezing rain and drizzle was in excess of 80 ââ¬â again nearly double the normal annual total. One of the most appealing features of Eastern Ontario is the extensive forest cover. This is made up of woodlands of varying structure. These woodlands, as well as natural fencerows, windbreaks, and plantations of pine and poplar, dominate the landscape. Icing impacts may best be understood by treating spatially larger scales, starting with individual trees, proceeding to stands, and finally to forest landscapes. Ice damage to trees can range from mere breakage of a few twigs, to bending stems to the ground, to moderate crown loss, to outright breakage of the trunk. In the 1998 Northeastern ice storm, icing lasted long enough that many trees which were bent over had their crowns glued to the snow surface by the ice in many instances for as long as 3 weeks. Some of those trees actually erect posture after release from the snow, while many others remain bent over after 2 years. The severity of damage is generally believed to be closely related to the severity of winds following the heaviest ice accumulations. Damage varies across a range of severity and subtlety: minor branch breakage; major branch loss; bending over of crowns; root damages; breakage of trunks and in some hardwoods, trunks can be split. Depending on the stand composition, the amount of ice accumulation, and the stand history, damage to stands can range from light and patchy to the total breakage of all mature stems. Complete flattening of stands occurred locally in the Northeaster 1998 storm. In response to more moderate damage, effects on stands could include: shifts in over story composition in favor of the most resistant trees; loss of stand growth until leaf area is restored; and loss of value of the growth due to staining or damage to stem form. The term landscape refers to a ââ¬Ëgroupâ⬠or a ââ¬Ëfamilyâ⬠of trees. I use the term vaguely because the size and composition of landscapes differ from region to region. The degree of damage is typically highly skewed by area. For example, in the January 1998 Northeaster storm, 1,800,000 ha of damage in Quebec was assessed by the Ministry of Natural Resource: very severe 4.2%, severe 32.0%, moderate 29.9%, and slight/trace 33.9% (The Science of the Total Environment, Volume: 262, Issue: 3, November 15, 2000, pp. 231-242 ). The effects on entire forest landscapes are highly patchy and variable. They also depend significantly on how landowners respond to the damage. Disturbance caused by diseases, by themselves or in conjunction with disturbance by insects, abiotic factors such as drought, fire and wind, and, increasingly, human activities, has played a critical role in the dynamics of many forest ecosystems in North America. Soil compaction, root disturbance and trunk/root collar damage caused by livestock reduce the vigor of trees. This paves the way for armillaria root rot, borers and other opportunistic organisms. Livestock also destroy the forest under story (reproduction), which hastens soil erosion and limits the future productivity of the site. The resulting forest decline reduces the quality, value and longevity of current and future trees on the site. Eliminating livestock from woodlands is the first step toward a healthier, more productive forest. As mentioned earlier in this paper, ice storm is a natural phenomenon caused by nature whereas forest fire are a result of human actions and preventable. One of the major differences between fire and ice storm is the rate of damage. Forest fire has a direct impact on the woodlands by changing the diversity of the landscape. Pest control and good forest management could improve the quality and well as productivity in these areas. Pests and diseases cause a slow change in biodiversity. As the woodland become infested, animals feeding from leafs and branch find it less desirable, eventually leaving the area in search of more suitable woodland. Similarly, forest fire, pests and disease spread but at a much slower rate. These agents infect the trees, eventually penetrating the roots and moving on to the next host. As mentioned previous, ice storm does not spread, rather the effect stays within the area. To conclude, fire and pests/disease are similar in the way these agents spread and infect their host. The preceding sentence can be best thought of as a virus infected itâ⬠s host as an analogy. Fire spreads at a much faster rate than pests/disease and the impact are instant. Both of these agents have long-term effect, which does not work in our favor. Ice storm affects the area it hits and will not spread. Furthermore, ice storms are predictable whereas fire is not since the cause of fire is human mistake and is hard to predict. Ice storms are not preventable but human actions can be prevented. The potential of damage from fire is far more severe than that of ice storm. We must increase the awareness to ensure that our woodland remains healthy and protect our ecosystem. Although, invention of smart phone started positively, overuse of such technology is creating negative effects on people. First negative effect of smart phone is the excessive stress to eyes. Human eyes are not meant to stationary stare at an object for a long time, but addicted smart phone users look at their screen for more than an hour. Many people nowadays start their day by turning on the smart phone and also end the day by it. Looking at such a small and close -range object creates immersive amount of stress to eyes, which is the leading cause of teenagers with glasses. Apart from bad effect to eyes, phones also cause dangerous environment(dangerous accidents) to the society. People are too concentrated to their smart phone sometimes that they cross a road without even watching out for cars. One of the leading cause of pedestrian-car accident comes from people with smartphone on their hands. An Example Lets say youre covering a story about the dramatic rescue of a boy who has fallen through the ice of a pond in winter. Your mainbar would include the most newsy aspects of the story - how the child fell and was rescued, what his condition is, his name and age and so on. Your sidebar, on the other hand, might be aà profile of the person who rescues the boy. Or you might write about how the neighborhood where the boy lives comes together to help the family. The article compares contrasts the successful unsuccessful responses to draw attention on successful practices. As responding to unexpected events is a fundamental function in project management, an analysis of 44 unexpected events faced by 22 experienced Project Managers in defense defense related organizations was conducted in the given study. The participants were asked to think of significant unforeseeable events during the project which took them by surprise or were unknown or unpredicted their responses were recorded to such events. The research was designed using a grid to unfold the differences between successful unsuccessful responses to unexpected events from the perspective of a project manager. The results found that some participants had difficulty in identifying unknown-unknowns ( circumstances, events outcomes that were not identified in the first place) from known-unknowns ( circumstances, events or outcomes that have been identified as possibly existing, but do not know whether they will take place or not). The ability to identify possible risks reflects the experience of the participants. The main purpose of the paper is to draw the importance of unexpected events during a project which many times are just neglected by Managers to study their responses in such events. These unexpected events threaten the viability of a project. The study carried on groups organizations looked at the behavior of individuals during crisis like situation. An Adapted Repertory Grid (RepGrid) method was used to explore the unexpected events their responses. The data was collected in three steps namely: discussion on each event to derive an overview of what happened in each event, response monitoring finally evaluation of the internal validity of data. The study revealed that successful responses were organic based on three pillars: A responsive functioning structure at organizational level, good interpersonal relationships at group level competent people at the individual level. The study gives an idea of responses to unexpected events their evaluation as success or failure. Certain studies suggest that conflict develops not only in environmental circumstances but in the styles used by individuals when confronted with a conflict. The manner in which a person responds to organizational decision and uncertainty will influence the responses of others and the individuals work experience. [8] But this has again beeen contradicted by concluding that a Project managers previous experience has a minimal impact on the projects performance whereas the size of the previous managed project does affect the managers performance.[9]. Music and the Leit Motif in Hamlet Throughout William Shakespeare's Hamlet, many leit motifs were seen. If the definition of a allegorical symbol was used for the concept of a leit motif, music was a leit motif in Hamlet. Music was repetitively brought up, in the play, and was also used by Shakespeare as a means of portraying the concept of being played upon. The flute was used to illustrate how Hamlet and Claudius played upon others and each other. Ophelia and other characters sang while they were mad, or dealing with mad characters. The use of music in Hamlet tied in with the concepts of Apolonian verse Dionysian, spying and lying, madness, poetry verse prose, and the burden of revenge on a thinking man. Possibly the most obvious case of music being used as a lead in for the idea of one playing upon another was seen in Act 4 Sc. 1, on lines 25-38. At this point in the play, Hamlet was confronted by Guildenstern, as Guildenstern made an attempt to spy on Hamlet. Hamlet countered Guildenstern's inquiry when he questioned him as to if he could not play a pipe, how could Guildenstern expect to play Hamlet, when he stated "You would play upon meâ⬠¦do you think I am easier to be played on than a pipe? Call me what instrument you will, you cannot play upon me." (Act 3. Sc. 2. Ln. 394-402). Hamlet then likened flute playing to lying, when he stated that "It is as easy as lying." (Act 3. Sc. 2 Ln. 387) Though Guildenstern attempted to play upon Hamlet, it was a futile attempt, as even Guildenstern admitted that he did "not have the skill" (Act 3. Sc. 2. Ln. 392) to play upon Hamlet. If being played upon was linked to music through the previously mentioned scene, three other major instances of characters were seen were one character played upon another. The first of these cases, were Hamlet put on the play to trick Claudius, was also in Act 3 Scene 2. Hamlet put on the play to prove to himself that the ghost's words were true and that Claudius did indeed kill his father. Verbal communication: Verbal communication is when one make use of a spoken language to show his or her opinion or simply Just to communicate with others.Verbal ommunication has a wide range of purposes. The most obvious function is that verbal communication is the main procedure when it comes to communicate with others. Also the purpose of verbal communication is to show one needs, desires, and ideas but above all it serves in the course of teaching and learning. Apart from all the purposes mentioned above, verbal communication can be used to form better relationship and building relationships with others.Non-verbal communication: Nonverbal communication refers to the actions that one make to communicate with others apart rom the obvious ones like speaking or writing. This form of communication includes: facial expressions, body language (hand movement, head movement), eye contact, proximity, posture, appearance, signs, symbols and pictures. It can be more efficient and sometimes more than verbal communication. Body language is all the body movements that one makes to express his or her feelings.This include how one stands, the way that someone is walking or simply Just the way one moves can give signs of how we are feeling. Another type of non-verbal communication is gestures. Hand movement, facial expression, head movement and even body postures are all gestures. Signs, symbols and pictures can be used tor example by workers to indicate some sort of work in progress in the streets. Another important type of non-verbal communication is the use of sign lang uage.This type is very useful to those who have hearing problems for example, someone deaf can use lip reading or hand signals to communicate with others. Even more there are those actions which we do them involuntary, we Just do them automatically which show how we are feeling, for xample: when someone is has a slumped posture it shows sadness. Written communication: This form of communication means a lot in todays life. Writing is more effective and formal than speech because writing is something permanent while speech is something that when it is said it can be forgotten.Even more writing can serve as a proof on something or someone or Just it can be records about a patient or some medicines. Written communication can be practiced in any business sector, for example in the health and social care area. When someone is sing written communication as his way of communication he needs to know how to include the right choice of words, write sentences in the correct Technological aids: In this present day technology is advancing a lot and we have many technologic aids that we can use to communicate with others.We have mobile phones to send text messages to someone and we can even call them. Apart from this computers help us to communication even worldwide with others or save some information. Technologic aids can help disabled person to communicate more freely without being reliant on others, or example nowadays in movies one can choose to enable subtitles so that one can understand better the movie.Another good example is the voice box which was invented by Professor Stephen Hawking which can convert small movements into speech. In the health and social care setting, two types of communication take place in one-to-one and group communication. These are formal and informal communication. Also as staff you may find yourself in group situation with the patient and a number of the patientââ¬â¢s family members. Formal interactions will be between staff and staff, staff with patients and staff with family members.Formal interactions are very effective in one-to-ones because it is polite and medical terms are used to make it sound more professional in a serious matter. Formal communication is effective when used by staff because it is a professional way of communicating important information. Informal communications is used only in curtain circumstances not in all because it is n ot always polite to be informal with everyone all the time but using informal communication can lighten up the mood and make the patient feel better about the situation.Verbal and non-verbal communication is used everyday by every staff member in the hospital setting so it is vital that the staff know how to communicate correctly. Verbal communication is when you are talking to a person. You should be confident so that the person that you are speaking to is reassured that you know what you are talking about. You should also be listening to what the person says carefully because you want to make that person feel better about being in the situation they are in. Non-verbal communication covers body language, proximity, posture, hand gestures and facial expressions.You can use this effectively by using these things well in the right way. E. g. when you are talking to someone in a one-to-one you should be standing/ sitting straight and making eye contact. Jargon and slang are used in the hospital between staff and staff when communicating. Jargon is more medical terminology, so when an incident occurs then the staff can use jargon to make the staff fell more confident so they are not embarrassed. Jargon is an universal language so it can be used by everyone which is an advantage. Slang is a terminology that continues to change.It is an informal way of communicating and is used normally between staff with staff and staff with patients. Slang also covers nicknames or terms for patients they are talking about. It can be used effectively to protect the identity of the patient they are discussing over which can add humour to very stressful situations. Group Communication. Group communication can take place between staff, patients and family members. It can also take place between a group of professionals. Both formal and informal communication is used.Again, formal communication is used more often in a group conversation. Group conversations are effective because it let s more people know important information and more ideas and opinions can be shared. Informal conversation can be used to make patients feel patients feel better about the situation and can be quite humorous but if it is used in the wrong circumstance people can be offended by what is said in a jokey manner. In a group conversation verbal communication is important because it is key to make sure that each person involved knows what is being said and each person can participate.When talking in a group it is effective to speak loud and clear so that the patient and family members know what you are saying. Also, having a good posture when talking is also effective because you will then come across as positive. Non-verbal communication is just as important as verbal communication when talking in a group. Body language is effective because it lets other people know that you are positive and confident about what they do. Jargon is generally used in group communication between staff profess ionals because it is not a professional way to communicate to patients and family members with.It is effective when used between colleagues because it is a universal language so when staff from different countries communicate Jargon can be used to tell the other hospital what has happened. Slang is only used when staff are by their own so if staff are having a group meeting then slang is usually used. Written communication is used to communicate between staff and staff. One-to-one Communication. In a hospital, communication takes place more frequently than informal interactions. Formal interactions will be between staff and staff, staff with patients and staff with family members.Formal interactions are very effective in one-to-ones because it is polite and medical terms are used to make it sound more professional in a serious matter. Formal communication is effective when used by staff because it is a professional way of communicating important information. Informal communications is used only in curtain circumstances not in all because it is n ot always polite to be informal with everyone all the time but using informal communication can lighten up the mood and make the patient feel better about the situation.Verbal and non-verbal communication is used everyday by every staff member in the hospital setting so it is vital that the staff know how to communicate correctly. Verbal communication is when you are talking to a person. You should be confident so that the person that you are speaking to is reassured that you know what you are talking about. You should also be listening to what the person says carefully because you want to make that person feel better about being in the situation they are in. Non-verbal communication covers body language, proximity, posture, hand gestures and facial expressions.You can use this effectively by using these things well in the right way. E. g. when you are talking to someone in a one-to-one you should be standing/ sitting straight and making eye contact. Jargon and slang are used in the hospital between staff and staff when communicating. Jargon is more medical terminology, so when an incident occurs then the staff can use jargon to make the staff fell more confident so they are not embarrassed. Jargon is an universal language so it can be used by everyone which is an advantage. Slang is a terminology that continues to change.It is an informal way of communicating and is used normally between staff with staff and staff with patients. Slang also covers nicknames or terms for patients they are talking about. It can be used effectively to protect the identity of the patient they are discussing over which can add humour to very stressful situations. Group Communication. Group communication can take place between staff, patients and family members. It can also take place between a group of professionals. Both formal and informal communication is used.Again, formal communication is used more often in a group conversation. Group conversations are effective because it let s more people know important information and more ideas and opinions can be shared. Informal conversation can be used to make patients feel patients feel better about the situation and can be quite humorous but if it is used in the wrong circumstance people can be offended by what is said in a jokey manner. In a group conversation verbal communication is important because it is key to make sure that each person involved knows what is being said and each person can participate.When talking in a group it is effective to speak loud and clear so that the patient and family members know what you are saying. Also, having a good posture when talking is also effective because you will then come across as positive. Non-verbal communication is just as important as verbal communication when talking in a group. Body language is effective because it lets other people know that you are positive and confident about what they do. Jargon is generally used in group communication between staff profess ionals because it is not a professional way to communicate to patients and family members with.It is effective when used between colleagues because it is a universal language so when staff from different countries communicate Jargon can be used to tell the other hospital what has happened. Slang is only used when staff are by their own so if staff are having a group meeting then slang is usually used. Written communication is used to communicate between staff and staff. E. g a board of notes about each patient is used to communicate in a ward without having to spent time to find each other when they could just write it down.Writing, good hand writing and reading skills are need to communicate through written communication. When written communication takes place, it needs to be clear and neat with good grammar. Signs and symbols are used everywhere in hospitals. E. g no smoking, directions etc. They are effective by communicating information to people who need it where they are. It c an communicate to many people without any human communication. Also with people with different cultures and languages can all understand what the signs and symbols mean.
